Huh, I didn't know there was anywhere actually called Metropolis. I did a little web sleuthing to see if it's always been named Metropolis (which I highly doubt) but can't seem to find the information anywhere. The city website is very cagey about it & other sites (like Wikipedia) just copied the information off their site. It used to be Fort Massac. I suspect they changed it as a marketing ploy in 1972, when they declared themselves the "Hometown of Superman" (which doesn't make sense because he grew up in Smallville but I digress).

Sara, the distance between you in the Twin Cities and southern Illinois feels like an eternity! The drive is very boring and the roads are bad... Might I suggest a venture north to Bemidji. But, do it before the snow falls! Because Minnesota winters are VERY snowy!
SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!! Illinois is closer to me then it once was, yet it is still a decent drive!
