Has Sam Mendes ever made a bad movie? I've just checked and no, he has not. This one is fabulous too, with great acting and all the reasons in the world not to be in the Marines.
Pretty much anything with Jake Jyllenhall in it moves on to my "to see" list. Plus, the author of the book lived in Portland while he was writing it and I remember when it was published.
For a war movie, it is remarkably not very violent, which I think was the whole point.
I am surprised you selected this movie. Not sure why I see it as a not you choice. I do agree about Sam Mendes.
