It's been sort of a "children
/teenagers giving
fabulous dramatic performances" kind of year for the movies* and this movie was of that ilk. I was charmed and enchanted by the world of "the Bathtub" a place which, outside of the movie, I would not want any child to have to live. Quvenzhane Wallis was amazing as Hushpuppy and Dwight Henry and Gina Montana also brought great performances to this pretty darn good film.
*Or at least movies I watched this year.

This feels NFS. Not sure why I feel that way. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand, the girl lives in abject poverty with an indifferent/alcoholic father and no mother. On the other hand, it's sort of a magical poverty and she's a pretty compelling character. It's kind of like a grittier Secret of Roan Inish but with less supportive parents. You might adore it and you might HATE it. But Tiffany, who doesn't like sad movies loved it. So you might be okay.
